Although there is no single, universal definition of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), the term is generally accepted to mean all kind of devices, networking components, applications and systems that combined allow people and organizations (i.e., businesses, nonprofit agencies, governments and criminal enterprises and so on) to interact in the digital world.

What is the meaning of ICT – Information and Communications Technology?

ICT or Information and Communications Technology is the convergence of computing, telecommunication and governance policies for how information should be accessed, used, secured, processed, transmitted and stored.

In some parts of the world, the ICT term is used as a synonym for information technology (IT), but the two terms can have slightly different meanings when used in different contexts. For example, in the USA the label IT is used when discussing technology in terms of business operations, while the term ICT is used more often in the context of education and government of computing.

ICT has become an umbrella term in many parts arond the world as digital communication links replace analog links, and the demand for professionals who have the skills and knowledge to handle the convergence of these links grows.

To that end, Information and Communications Technology ICT employees can expect to work in posts (positions) where the focus of their job includes improving digital literacy, data literacy and using emerging technologies to optimize legacy and old communication channels. This includes researching how emerging technologies such as augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) can support old traditional technologies and communication theories
